Manufacturing products for the Defence Sector

Requirements for Ministry of Defence Power Distribution Units and cable assemblies can and do vary, but there are some set principles that can be applied to any Data & Power Solutions product. We apply these principles to any product we build for the MOD whether it be completely custom designed or an “off-the-shelf” product. Below are some details outlining these principles:

Earthing:

External:

All of our power strips come supplied with an external M5 earth stud. Attached to this earth stud is a 250mm Y/G 4.0mm tri-rated earth bond strap for external earthing of the PDU chassis. The size of this earth bond is automatically increased with the Current (A) rating of the PDU.

If the length and type of external earth bond needs to be tailored made to suit a specific application then please just ask for something different.

Internal:

The internal earthing is based on a minimum of 2.5mm wire or bus bar and is dual linked to internal earth studs. All metal components of the PDU are earth bonded together and linked to the external earth stud.

Wiring methodology:

Where possible soldered connections* will be used and DIN mounted terminal blocks to ensure maximum resilience to vibration and shock. All solder connections are both a solder and a mechanical join.

*some currently available sockets do not support solder connections e.g Schuko

LSZH

Data and Power Solutions has a great deal of experience in supplying CIDA FHMD approved products. We understand your requirements and have worked in depth with many MOD clients to source approved cable for their power strips and cord sets.

Not all cables that claim to be LSZH compliant are approved or suitable for your requirements and not all LSZH cable that is suitable is currently incorporated into the CIDA FHMD. At Data and Power Solutions we work closely with our suppliers to make sure that we are supplying you not only with the right cable but all the information you need to prove or gain incorporation into the FHMD.

Production and Testing:

All DPS products produced go through our tried and tested "Design validation and continuity assurance" process as well as our advanced electrical acceptance testing. All PDU's leave our factory having been individually tested and with a unique serial number that allows us to trace back each product to the team members who assembled the unit and the components to the supplier level.

Also at our disposal are more rigours and physical tests such as our thermal acceptance testing which allows us to expose PDU designs and components to increased electrical stress to further prove the design and specification. This test is available on request.

Manufacturing Statement / Certificate of Conformity:

Each type of MOD power product purchased comes with either a manufacturing statement (e.g lead assemblies) or a certificate of conformance (power strips) showing that the component has been built and tested to all the required standards.

Individual test results are available on request*

* a fee of £1 is applied to each individual test certificate
